Like many cities across the UK, Exeter is constantly striving to become a more eco-friendly environment - for the good of the planet and its people. With an ambitious plan to be a net zero city by 2030, there’s a lot of work to be done to make sure this happens. Fortunately, there are a number of local community organisations committed to helping the city meet its sustainability goals. In this blog, you’ll find a comprehensive list of the sustainable action currently underway across the Exeter and wider Devon areas.
Climate Action Hub
This community hub allows the public to drop by and learn more about how they can work together to tackle the climate crisis, advising them on action they can take, discussing concerns, sharing resources and signposting them towards other organisations. Check out Climate Action Hub Exeter for more information.
Library of Things
A Library of Things is a collection of everyday objects that are loaned out for a small fee, which are then returned to be loaned by others. Sharing things we only need to use every now and then - such as DIY tools, gardening equipment, kitchen appliances and camping gear - effectively reduces waste and the environmental impact of manufacturing and shipping goods, alongside being much more affordable than purchasing items firsthand. See Exeter Library of Things for more information.
Repair Cafes
Repair Cafes are designed to help people fix broken items for free so they don’t have to throw them away. Volunteers with a knack for DIY will give their time to help repair various items to avoid them getting sent to landfill. Repair Cafes are a great way to make items last longer, reduce waste and build community resilience, and can be found all across Exeter and the surrounding areas.
Community Action Grounds (CAG) Devon
Community Action Grounds (CAG) Devon is an organisation that supports grassroots groups across the county to build more climate-resilient communities. Through the provision of information, guidance, training, online resources, access to reduced insurance, small grants and networking opportunities, CAG Devon supports the efforts of groups working on waste reduction, composting, re-use and repair and other sustainability projects You can find out more on the CAG Devon website.
Community Fridges
Community Fridges are a public space where perishable food that would otherwise have been wasted can be made available to the public, with the aim of reducing food waste, saving people money and bringing the community together.
Based in Exeter Central Library, Exeter Community Fridge is volunteer-led, funded by the National Lottery-funded 'Food Rescue' project and takes contributions from local organisations. Meanwhile, the St. Thomas Community Fridge is a volunteer-led vegan-based scheme which accepts whole fruit and vegetables, as well as sealed products labelled vegan, from households and businesses.
